How to Choose a Snow Removal Company in Calgary

Almost every Calgary snow removal company will tell you they are reliable, licensed and insured. That is table stakes, and it tells you nothing about which one will actually turn up at 6am after a heavy overnight snowfall.

Here is how to tell them apart before you commit.

Compare what is included, not the price

The single most common mistake is comparing two numbers that are not measuring the same service.

One quote covers the driveway. The other covers the driveway, the front walk, the public sidewalk and ice control. The second is more expensive and cheaper at the same time, because with the first you are still shovelling the sidewalk you are legally responsible for.

Before comparing any prices, get the same answers from everyone:

• Exactly which surfaces are included? Driveway only, or driveway plus walkway, steps and the public sidewalk?
• What snowfall depth triggers a visit? Commonly around 5 cm. Ask whether it is per event or cumulative.
• How long after snowfall ends do you arrive?
• Is ice control included, or billed separately?
• Are you insured, and can you show me?

The five questions that reveal the most

1. “What happens after a heavy overnight snowfall?”

Everyone looks capable in November. The real question is what happens on the worst morning of the year, when every customer needs service at once.

Listen for whether they have a route order, whether contract customers are prioritised, and roughly how long a full round takes. A vague answer here is the answer.

2. “Is ice control included?”

In Calgary this separates a real service from a cheap one. Chinooks melt snow during the day and refreeze it overnight, so a driveway cleared perfectly on Tuesday afternoon can be a sheet of ice on Wednesday morning with no new snow.

The bylaw standard for the public sidewalk is bare surface, and ice counts. A plow-only arrangement leaves your highest-risk mornings uncovered.

3. “Can I see proof of insurance?”

Not “are you insured”, which everyone answers yes to. Ask to see the certificate and check it is current.

This matters concretely: if an uninsured contractor damages your garage door, your driveway edge or a neighbour’s property, or their worker is injured on your property, that can become your problem.

4. “How do you handle damage?”

Plows chip driveway edges, catch lawn edges and occasionally hit things. It happens even with good operators.

A company that answers this cleanly, explaining that they mark hazards, note pre-existing damage, and have a process, is telling you they have dealt with it professionally before. A company that says damage never happens is telling you something else.

5. “What are you like to reach in January?”

Ask how to contact them mid-season and how quickly they respond. The company that answers the phone in August is not always the one that answers in a snowstorm.

Red flags

No written contract. A verbal arrangement about response times is worth nothing in February.

No proof of insurance, or reluctance to provide it. Walk away.

A price much lower than everyone else. Usually it means fewer surfaces, a higher trigger depth, no ice control, or a business that will be overwhelmed the first heavy week.

Cash only, no invoice, no business details. Beyond the tax question, you have no record and no recourse.

Pressure to sign immediately. Seasonal availability is genuinely limited, so early booking is real. Manufactured urgency is not.

No local track record. Ask how long they have operated in Calgary. Anyone can buy a plow in October.

Green flags

• A written scope listing the surfaces, trigger and response time
• Current insurance documentation offered without being chased
• Real, findable reviews from Calgary customers, ideally recent
• A clear answer about what happens in a heavy week
• Willingness to walk the property before quoting, on commercial sites especially
• Service records or photo documentation, which protects both sides

Book earlier than feels necessary

Two practical reasons.

Availability. Good companies fill their routes before the season. By the first heavy snowfall, the ones with space are the ones nobody booked.

Pricing. Early-season rates are generally better than mid-season, when demand spikes and everyone is at capacity.

August and September feel absurdly early for snow. They are the right time to sort it.
